Joseph Updates

We fed Joseph went upstairs to feed ourselves went back downstairs and the nurse said that he had been sleeping soundly and then startled awake threw up and got really agitated. Spitting up is normal for babies, but the nurses were worried because he startled so suddenly from a deep sleep. Then last night he did the same thing and had a dusky spell. (he stopped breathing and started to to turn blue.) The hospital will not release him until he his done with the dusky spells. So to make sure there is no blockage in his stomach or intestines they took him to do a dye test. He drinks dye mixed with formula and then they x-ray him and watch where the dye goes. They just finished the dye test and we will post the results as soon as we know. The doctors thinks that he is just a spitty baby and what they do to treat that is give him an antacid. I guess the problem is that he spits up stomach acid and his bodies natural reaction is to stop breathing so the acid doesn't get sucked into the wrong tube. I don't think I fully understand it but the antacid means less acid in his stomach so when he spits up he will be able to handle it better.
The other concern was blood sugar levels. I talked to a nurse and she said that sometimes bigger babies have a hard time with blood sugar. They have been weening Joseph's iv and his blood sugar has remained stable. The doctors are not worried about his blood sugar and their biggest priority is to make sure he doesn't have anymore dusky spells before he goes home. Breanna and I have to leave our hospital room tonight but Joseph will be here for at least another day. We love our little guy and we love spending time with him. We will keep you posted!
